Congratulations Inaugural Bonita Kraft Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Scholarship Awardee, Janell Pisegna, MOT, OTR/L

Congratulations to our inaugural 2022 Bonita Kraft Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Scholarship Awardee, Janell Pisegna, MOT, OTR/L, The Ohio State University, Examination of Poststroke Occupational Therapy Mental Health Care in Inpatient Rehabilitation

The Bonita Kraft Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Scholarship supports an occupational therapist doctoral candidate in pursuing research in the areas of mental health and serious mental illness.

Bonita Kraft is an occupational therapist who spent 45 years working in community mental health. She has long been an advocate for OT and mental health; passionate about promoting the need for occupational therapy to be a part of mental health services and treatment as well as for building evidence for occupational therapists to use in practice. Bonita is a proud alum of San Jose State University (BSOT), has been a dedicated volunteer for AOTF, The California Foundation for Occupational Therapy, the Occupational Therapy Association of California as well as a long-time member of AOTA. She is excited to support the next generation of OT scientists with this scholarship who will add new knowledge to the profession and better serve those with severe mental illness and mental health issues.

Please make a gift to help us support the future of OT, strengthen evidence-based practice and improve the quality of care. Your generosity will secure this scholarship for generations of OTs.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Munsell, 2022 Nedra Gillette Endowed Research Fellowship Awardee

Congratulations to our 2022 Nedra Gilette Endowed Research Fellowship Awardee, 2022 Elizabeth Munsell, PhD, OT, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Project Title: Developing a Theory-Based Employment Intervention Framework for People with Early Parkinson’s Disease using a Stakeholder-Engaged Approach

To honor its namesake Nedra Gillette, the Nedra Gillette Endowed Research Fellowship award is in support of a postdoctoral researcher's foundational occupational therapy study into the human condition.  Please make a gift to help us support the future of OT, strengthen evidence-based practice and improve the quality of care. Your generosity will secure this scholarship for generations of OTs.

Planning Grant Collective 2021: Fatigue: An Understudied Barrier to Participating Fully in Daily Life

January 18-20, 2022

PGC 2021

The 2021 AOTF Planning Grant Collective, “Fatigue: An Understudied Barrier to Participating Fully in Daily Life” was held virtually again this year.  Considering many conditions have fatigue as a major characteristic, all of the issues related to the ongoing pandemic and what appears to be a major comorbidity in COVID “long haulers”, the topic chosen was very timely.  A wide range of disciplines was represented at the workshop, as well as several funding agencies including the Arthritis Foundation, the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the following NIH Institutes/Centers: National Cancer Institute (NCI); National Institute on Aging (NIA); and National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

New priority areas of research were identified and included: the need for identification of fatigue subgroups/deep phenotypes; novel trial designs and comparative effectiveness research; implementation science research to improve delivery and effectiveness of fatigue interventions; and the need for consistent and comparable treatment taxonomy.

The Foundation plans to convene one Collective a year and plans are underway for 2022.  We believe this interdisciplinary approach to identifying important research topics will result in critical new research in questions of great interest and opportunity for the OT profession.

NSF Grant Secured Using AOTF Intervention Grant Research

Our 2016 Intervention Research Grant Recipient, Mary Khetani, Sc.D., OTR/L, Associate Professor, Department of Occupational Therapy, College of Applied Health Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago, mobilized an interdisciplinary and community engaged research team to secure a $1.17M National Science Foundation grant, SCC-IRG Track 2: Smart and Connected Family Engagement for Equitable Early Intervention Service Design, using preliminary research funded by Electronic participation-focused care planning support for families: a pilot study, published here https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31318677/ and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32259292/. Mary was also a Pi Theta Epsilon (PTE), honor society for occupational therapy, inductee.

KhetaniI want to thank AOTF for investing the funds and time necessary for me to deliver on my AOTF IRG grant, which laid important foundation for our ability to get to this point in our scientific contribution. I am most appreciative and promise to deliver on the project and pay it forward with those I get to mentor.
