Faculty Development
...................................................................................................................

Among the first efforts of the Foundation's new Institute for the Study of Occupation and Health were two programs in faculty development, with the intent of helping faculty achieve their goals in moving entry-level to the post-baccalaureate degree as required by ACOTE, the educational certifying body of the profession.

Curriculum Mentoring Project

The first of these programs concluded at the end of 2002. This program, called the "Curriculum Mentor's Project", was designed as a year-long pilot study to determine what effect a mentor could have on the development of increased scholarship across faculty and student participants in a master's entry level program in occupational therapy. Five schools were selected from amongst the applicant pool and worked with their mentors for a 12 month period. The program is being evaluated by a doctoral student in education who has studied the mentoring process exhibited by the five faculty groups and their mentors over this period of time. If the results of the study appear to warrant it, AOTF will seek grant funds to allow the program to be offered to other programs wishing to participate. When the report is completed, you will be able to acces it through this webpage.

Regional Workshop Series

The second program, dubbed the "Regional Workshop Series on Curriculum Revision", is nearing completion. In this program, designed collaboratively by AOTA, ACOTE, and AOTF, groups of schools from geographic locales elect to share a series of three workshops, each school usually hosting one workshop. Both academic and fieldwork faculty join in the exploration of topics designed to move the program into the graduate education mode, to insure that the concept of occupation is grounding the curriculum, and that new and innovative fieldwork methods and sites are represented in each program. To date, 22 schools have participated. If you are interested in having this dynamic series of learning experiences available to your program, please contact the Foundation. The Series may still be available in some regions.

Check here to access the Bulletin Board of the Regional Workshop Series, and to utilize the learning experiences posted there.
