Ruth Ann Watkins, MBA, OTR/L, FAOTA |
Ruth Ann received her OT degree from the University of Illinois and her MBA from the University
of Chicago. Most of her professional career was spent ats the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
where she rose from staff OT to Vice President of Allied Health and then Vice President of
Marketing and Communications. In 1991 she established her company Out & About, Inc. which,
for 10 years, provided individual outings for clients whose average age was 80.
She held faculty positions at Northwestern University Medical School, Department of Rehabilitation
Medicine and adjunct faculty position at the University of Illinois, Chicago, in the department of
Occupational Therapy.
Ruth Ann was named a Fellow by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
She was the first Chair of the AOTA Physical Disabilities Special Interest Section and she served
as the AOTA liaison to the National Easter Seal Society’s Board. On the state level she served as
Vice President of the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association (IOTA) and co-chairman of the
reimbursement Committee and she remains an active member of the state and national OT
associations.
Throughout the years she has served on both Boards and committees of professional associations
and not for profit organizations. Ruth Ann is a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago and is a
Trustee and Secretary of the Retirement Research Foundation. She and her husband Tom split
their time between their homes in Old Town in Chicago and Pompano Beach, Florida. In
addition to her volunteer activities her hobbies are reading, fishing, gardening, walking,
traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Vice President
Sharon Goode Ryan, MA, OTR
|
Sharon Ryan studied Occupational
Therapy at Sargent College of Allied Health Professions
at Boston University. She has trained health
professionals on techniques and treatment modalities
used in Occupational Therapy, and she has treated
geriatric rehabilitation patients. She was elected to
the Board of Directors of the American Occupational
Therapy Foundation in November 2002, for a three-year
term. She was elected Vice President in 2004 and re-elected to the position in 2007
Ms. Ryan's long history of volunteer work and community
service includes leadership positions in support of
education, social agencies serving the needs of families
and children, and in support of the arts-theatre and
music. Currently, she is chair of Student Affairs committee
of the Boston University Trustee Board and in her spare
time enjoys needlepoint and traveling.

Secretary
Nancy Talbot
OTR, MEd.
|
Nancy received both a baccalaureate
degree in Occupational Therapy and a Masters in Education
from the University of New Hampshire. Teaching has always
been a major focus for her. After 5 years of clinical
experience as a psychiatric Occupational therapist,
she spent the rest of her professional career in academia.
She taught at 3 different universities, with over 28
years at Boston University, serving as faculty, Department
Chair and the last 14 years as Dean of Sargent College
at Boston University. She has served in a variety of
elected and appointed positions in Massachusetts Occupational
Therapy Association and in AOTA, including Treasurer
of AOTA for five years. She is a Fellow of AOTA. Over
the years she has been a consultant in curriculum development,
evaluation of programs in the health fields, and in
space planning. She retired in 1996, but the next two
years she worked part time to assist the University
in fund raising. Her hobbies include watercolors, travel, gardening,
photography, swimming, boating and canoeing.

Treasurer
William H. Farland, PhD
|
Dr. William Farland joined Colorado State University in 2006 as the Vice President for Research, bringing decades
of interdisciplinary research leadership experience to the position. Previously, he was the highest ranking career
scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency, serving as deputy assistant administrator for science in the
Office of Research and Development and director of the Office of the Science Advisor. Farland holds his master’s
in zoology and his doctorate in cell biology and biochemistry from UCLA. He obtained his bachelor’s from Loyola
University in Los Angeles. He was awarded an Individual National Research Service Award from the National Cancer
Institute to pursue postdoctoral training in DNA Damage and Repair at the University of California-Irvine and at
Brookhaven National Laboratory. As Vice President for Research, he serves as the chief institutional advocate
and facilitator for faculty research activities and is responsible for programmatic excellence in research. Specific
responsibilities of the position include oversight and promotion of external research funding and associated regulations,
needs and capabilities; serving as liaison with federal research officials and agencies; identification of research
opportunities; and development and oversight of interdisciplinary programs and research centers. Bill and his wife,
Phyllis, reside in Fort Collins where he also pursues his passion for fly fishing and she continues her career as a
horsewoman and nationally-recognized show hunter and jumper judge.

Bette R. Bonder,
Ph.D, OTR/L, FAOTA
|
Bette is the Dean of the College of Sciences, Cleveland State University. Prior to being named Dean
she served as interim Dean for a year and as Associate Dean since 2004 and was a Professor in the
Departments of Health Sciences and Psychology.
Bette is recognized as an academic leader in Occupational Therapy. Her current research focuses on
community capacity-building to reduce health disparities in Cleveland and on the meaning of occupation
for older adults in palliative care. She has authored numerous refereed and invited papers, books and
books of instructional materials, and presented at numerous conferences and workshops.
Clinically Bette has worked as an Occupational therapist and a psychologist in mental health and geriatric
settings. She has taught at Towson University and the University of Illinois as well as serving as a
counselor at Texas Woman's University.
Bette has served on numerous of various organizations as well as on various committees of the Ohio
OT Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association where she was named a Fellow
in 1988. She served on the AOTF/AOTA original Research Advisory Council, and on the editorial Board
as well as Editor of the AOTF professional journal, OTJR.
Bette has received many awards in recognition of her contributions to the field of Occupational
Therapy as well as to Cleveland State University.

Patricia Booth, MAT, (Public Member)
|
Pat received her BA, from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and her MAT from Radcliffe College/Harvard Graduate
School of Education, Cambridge, MA. She worked at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) for 20 years in
progressive areas of administrative responsibility and retired as assistant administrator of the hospital.
She has been long involved in the Chicago political and educational arenas, participating actively in the campaigns
of local office holders and serving for 3 terms as the elected community representative to a local school council
for the Chicago Public Schools.
She has extensive Board experience. She is a member of the Women's Board of the RIC, where she served as
President and she is on the Board of Archeworks, an alternative design school where students work in
multidisciplinary teams with nonprofit partners to create design solutions for social concerns such as marginalization
of economically poor neighborhoods, and products to improve the quality of occupation for stroke survivors. Pat
also serves on the Board of Lake Bluff Open Lands which addresses land conservation and restoration. She
currently holds officer and committee chair positions in all three organizations. She has a strong interest in social
justice.

Adam Drobot, Ph.D. (Public Member)
|
Adam Drobot received his BS in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and his Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from the
University of Texas in Austin, TX.
He is President of Telcordia's Government and Public Sector Business Unit and Applied Research Unit. He is responsible for planning
and implementing Systems Engineering solutions that are applicable to Federal, State and Local government problems. Applied
Research Unit consists of 250 researchers involved in many aspects of Internet broadband and information networking and software
technologies. Prior to working at Telcordia Adam managed Advanced Technology Group at Science Applications International Corp.
a seven billion dollar Fortune 250 firm.
His main research interest is the development of multidisciplinary, computationally-based tools for life cycle support of complex
products. He has published over 100 journal articles, is a frequent presenter at conferences and holds twelve patents. He is a
member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Physical Society, the American Association for
Advancement of Science, Sigma Phi Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi.

Cynthia Epstein MA, OTR, FAOTA
|
Cynthia is a graduate
of Tufts University’s Boston School of Occupational Therapy
and did her Master’s at New York University. She founded
Occupational Therapy Consultants, Inc. in 1979. It was
one of the first OT owned Therapy companies in New Jersey
and nationally. This community based model gradually expanded
and now includes delivery of Occupational, physical, speech
and behavioral health consultation and Therapy services
across the developmental spectrum, addressing client needs
in varied community environments. OTC’s Clinic at Somerset
was developed in 1994 to address needs of children and
young adults with sensory processing dysfunction.
Cynthia advocates incorporation of a consultative approach
in all therapeutic service delivery. She has authored
many articles, book chapters, co-edited a text on Occupational
Therapy consultation and has lectured widely. She has
been recognized at national, state and local levels for
her many contributions. She has represented NJ on the
Representative Assembly and was Agenda Chair. She has
participated on AOTA’s Commission on Practice, Specialty
Certification Board, Task Forces on Continuing Competency;
Organizational Design; Transitional Planning and Recertification.
She currently serves on the NJOTA Executive Board and
is their State Liaison. |

Mary Foto

Mary Foto, OT, FAOTA, CCM, a past President of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), is chief executive
officer of two companies: The Foto Group, Inc. which provides non-physician peer medical review and supporting systems,
and Treat-it.com?, an ASP documentation and practice management package for non-physician rehabilitation and technology
providers. In November, she was selected to the American Occupational Therapy Foundation Board.
The Foto Group counts among its current and former clients in both government and commercial healthcare: WellPoint/Blue
Cross of California (for more than 38 years), United Government Services, Empire/Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York, HMSA,
Blue Cross of Arizona, HealthLink/Blue Cross of Missouri, Anthem Colorado, UniCare, Maximus, Johnson & Johnson, and Kraft.
The Foto Group created the first electronic medical information system for Blue Cross of California over 22 years ago, ported
the system over to the Florida Shared System (FSS), and later worked with CMS as they made the attachment a national
Medicare requirement. The Foto Group also created the Data Dictionary for CMS to accompany the national electronic
attachment. Later, The Foto Group created an expert system to electronically review the attachment.
Ms. Foto, an internationally-recognized, non-physician medical review and evidence-based practice expert, has served as
AOTA’s representative to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Health Care Practitioner Advisory Committee (HCPAC)
Review Board for the past 14 years. For six of those years, she represented all non-physicians to the AMA’s Practice Expense
Advisory Committee. In 1997, she served on Vice President Gore’s task force to develop The Patient Bill of Rights. In April
2003, and again in 2005, where she was elected Co-Chair of the American Medical Association’s HCPAC and continues to
represent the Advisory Committee and all of its non-physician member organizations as a voting member of the AMA’s Relative
Value Update Committee (RUC). The RUC develops and recommends annual updates to the Medicare fee schedule which is
used by most payers in the United States. In March of 2007, she was appointed to the California Medical Evidence Evaluation
Advisory Committee.
As a past President of the American Occupational Therapy Association, (1995-1998), she chaired the Tri-Alliance of Therapy
Professions and also the Coalition of Rehabilitation Therapies allowing her an opportunity to represent multiple professions.
In 2004-2005, she was a member of CMS’s Negotiated Rule Making for Orthotics and Prosthetics and has testified before Congress a
nd Congressional committees on electronic medical records. She has authored many peer-reviewed journal articles and has performed
over 300 speaking engagements in the past 10 years.

Phyllis Bauer Madachy
(Public Member)
|
Ms. Madachy is Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Howard County Government, in Maryland. She has held this position since November 2007.
Ms. Madachy was Administrator of the Howard County, Maryland, Office on Aging from 1995 to 2007 and held a number of positions with that
agency since 1981. Her undergraduate degree is in Political Science from Wheeling Jesuit University, and she holds a graduate degree in
management from the Johns Hopkins University.
With partners in the public and non-profit sectors, she developed the Aging in Place Initiative, which won Howard County a National Civic League
All American City Award in 2001. Occupational therapists at the local, state, and national level have been consistent partners in her efforts over
the years. Together, they have been involved in older driver issues, home modification, fall prevention, and other activities designed to keep
older adults in control over their lives throughout their lifespan.
She is a past president of the Maryland Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the Maryland Association of Nutrition Programs. She is a
founding member of the Homes for Life Coalition and previously served on the board of the Howard County Coalition of Geriatric Services. Ms.
Madachy was active on the American Society on Aging's Leadership Council for the Network on Environments, Services, and Technologies
(NEST); the National Reverse Mortgage Association's Aging in Place Advisory Council; and the National Rebuilding Together's Safe at Home
Advisory Council. Her articles have appeared in local, state, and national publications.
Her work has been recognized with awards from the Howard County Coalition of Geriatric Services, Howard County Association of Community
Services, Maryland Association of Counties, Maryland Occupational Therapy Association, National Association of Counties, National Council on
Aging, and American Occupational Therapy Association. She is an member of the Howard County Women’s Hall of Fame and recipient of the
Horizon Foundation Richard McCauley Award for Transformational Leadership.

Diana L. Ramsay

Diana Ramsay serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Sheppard Pratt Health System which is headquartered in Baltimore, MD. She is responsible for overall program operations and delivery of clinical and administrative services for the hospitals, day hospitals, acute care community hospital programs, outpatient services, schools, child and adolescent residential treatment centers, professional services, joint ventures, and community-based psychiatric rehabilitation subsidiaries. In this capacity she establishes overall strategic directives and policies to optimize the service quality, resource allocation and program efficiency of the Health System. Diana also is the past president of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. She serves on the boards of the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems and the American Occupational Therapy Foundation.

Charles Christiansen, EdD, OTR/L
|
Dr. Charles Christiansen assumed duties as Executive Director of the Foundation on March 17, 2008. Prior to that, he served as Vice Provost
for Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota Rochester and Founding Director, Center for Allied Health Programs. From 1993-2006, Dr.
Christiansen also served as Dean and George T. Bryan Distinguished Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch and earlier as Professor
and Director, School of Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of British Columbia. His academic career has spanned over three decades.
Chuck earned his doctorate in educational administration at The University of Houston and completed a post-doctoral residency through Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He holds Master's and professional undergraduate degrees in Counseling Psychology and Occupational
Therapy, respectively. Dr. Christiansen was named a distinguished alumnus of the University of North Dakota during its Centennial celebrations
and has held adjunct professorships at various universities in this country and abroad. He has served in numerous leadership positions in
professional societies, has co-authored or edited eight textbooks in Occupational Therapy and Occupational science, and has published over
100 chapters and scientific articles. He resides in Rockville, Maryland and has three adult children. He is a fellow of the American Occupational
Therapy Association and serves on the board of directors of the Society for the Study of Occupation: USA.

Penny Moyers-Cleveland EdD, OTR/L, BCMH, FAOTA
|
Penelope A. Moyers-Cleveland, EdD, OTR/L, BCMH, FAOTA is the 27th President of the American Occupational
Therapy Association (AOTA). Moyers-Cleveland was elected in 2006 by the direct vote of association members and took office during
the 87th Annual Conference and Expo in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Moyers-Cleveland has been a strong advocate for the profession of Occupational Therapy. She has 29 years of experience, having
developed expertise in mental health practice at Central State Hospital in Louisville, KY and in upper extremity rehabilitation at Plastic
Surgery Associates in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Moyers-Cleveland has also met the requirements developed by AOTA to be Board Certified in Mental Health (BCMH). In addition,
she has extensive experience working with persons with substance use disorders; she also has research experience in measurement
of upper extremity function. Currently, Dr. Moyers-Cleveland is serving as Professor and Chair of the Occupational Therapy Department
at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Moyers-Cleveland was Dean of the School of Occupational Therapy at the University of Indianapolis. Dr.
Moyers-Cleveland co-leads a support group for persons with HIV and AIDS. Dr. Moyers-Cleveland has published extensively on the topic
of substance use disorders and has worked with AOTA to systematically review the evidence to identify effective interventions. This work
has led to creation of AOTA evidence briefs designed to help practitioners select interventions for facilitating recovery and return to
successful Occupational performance. Dr. Moyers-Cleveland has also written articles in OT Practice on the topic of continuing competence
and professional development, an outgrowth of her previous AOTA role as Chair of the Commission on Continuing Competence and
Professional Development.
Dr. Moyers-Cleveland has an extensive academic resume. She has an EdD in Adult Education, with a major in Public Administration from
Ball State University, and a Master's Degree in Community Development from the University of Louisville. Her bachelor's degree is in
Occupational Therapy from the University of Missouri.

Joan Rogers, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA |
Dr. Rogers is Professor of Occupational Therapy, Nursing, and Psychiatry and Chair of the Department of
Occupational Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. She received her professional education from the University of Southern
California, Los Angeles, and her doctoral degree in educational psychology/life-span human development from the University of Illinois-Urbana.
Her clinical expertise is in geriatric Occupational Therapy and she was the first elected chair of the AOTA Gerontology Special Interest Section.
Her research focuses on disability in older adults with physical, mental, or affective impairments. The National Institute of Nursing Research s
ingled out her intervention study, designed to improve the functional independence in morning care tasks of nursing home residents with
dementia, as a "science advance" that made a difference in peoples' lives. Dr. Rogers is a charter member of the AOTF Academy of Research
and a recipient of the AOTA's Eleanor Clark Slagle Lectureship, Award of Merit, and Fellow designation. She is also a Fellow of the
Gerontological Society of America and a Distinguished Scholar of the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals. In 2007, she was named
Chair of the newly formed AOTA/AOTF Research Advisory Panel; she served on the AOTA Board of Directors from 2005-08.

Elizabeth
B. Devereaux,

After
serving 16 years as a faculty member of the
Department of Psychiatry, Marshall University
School of Medicine, Liz retired in 1994 as
an Associate Professor and Director, Division
of Occupational Therapy. She received her
Bachelor of Science in OT from Ohio State
University and her Master of Social Work from
West Virginia University. Liz is an acknowledged
consultant, lecturer and workshop presenter
at local, state, national and international
levels. She is widely published and has been
active in AOTA, having served as Chairman
of the Accreditation Committee, and on the
Executive Board as Chairman of the Fiscal
Advisory Committee and Educational Liaison
to External Agencies and Organizations. In
1977 Liz became a Fellow of the AOTA and in
1984 received its highest award, the Award
of Merit. She served as Chairperson of the
Executive Board Search Committees for the
AOTA Executive Director in both 1975 and 1987.
She completed her second term as President
of the AOTF and member of the AOTA Executive
Board in 1994, and received an Honorary Life
Membership on the Foundation Board of Directors
in 1995. Liz received the AOTA-AOTF Presidents'
Commendation in honor of Wilma L. West in
2004. The Commendation honored Liz's sustained
contributions to Occupational Therapy over
a lifetime of service. In retirement she enjoys
her three adult children and their spouses,
reading, needlework, gardening, travel and
consulting. |

Ann P. Grady,
PhD, OTR, FAOTA
|
Ann teaches leadership, interdisciplinary teamwork, consultation and consults with the Colorado Department of Education
on issues related to community inclusion. She holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from the College of New Rochelle, a certificate in Occupational
Therapy from Columbia University, a master's from the University of Denver and a doctoral degree in human communication studies also from the
University of Denver. Ann's research interests include the development of leadership in women and the effectiveness of services delivered in
context with children and families. Ann has served the profession in a number of capacities on state and national levels. She is a charter Fellow,
former Speaker of the Representative Assembly and past President of the AOTA. Ann previously served as Vice President of the Foundation and
Chair of its Research Development Committee. She has been recognized by numerous awards, most notably the AOTA's Eleanor Clarke Slagle
Lectureship and the AOTF's Meritorious Service Award. Her passion from all her professional work focuses on the inclusion of all people in their
community of choice for living, working and playing. Her love of the mountains and outdoors frequently takes her to her mountain home in Dillon,
Colorado, for hiking, cross-county skiing and contemplating.

Don has a great depth of experience in the insurance field, especially in the area of group insurance administration and
mass marketing. Maginnis and Associates operates internationally as insurance consultants and administrators for professional associations,
specializing in the development and implementation of Professional Liability coverage for Allied Health Professionals. Don is a former Trustee and
Treasurer of Foundation for Physical Therapy, former Member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Nursing Advisory Council,
Past President of Professional Insurance Mass-Marketing Association (PIMA), Past Council Member of the American Institute of Professional
Association Group Insurance Administration (AIPAGIA), Associate Member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). Former
Member - Associate of Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. He enjoys golf, boating and travel.

Maralynne D. Mitcham,

Dr. Mitcham is a Professor and
the Director of Occupational Therapy Educational
Program, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
in the College of Health Professions at
the Medical University of South Carolina.
An experienced academician, Dr. Mitcham
is known nationally and internationally
as a resource for teaching and instructional
design; curriculum development and evaluation;
and for her approach to integrating service
and research into Occupational Therapy
curricula. Her main research interests
focus around Occupational perspectives
of health, well-being, and quality of life
for elders. She has directed several federally
funded community-based grants which focus
on partnering with a broad spectrum of
community organizations to engage faculty
and students in providing services to medically
underserved areas. Currently she is leading
curriculum initiatives to promote interprofessional
education across the campus and pursuing
her interests in compassion and caring.
She is a past president of the American
Occupational Therapy Foundation and during
her tenure she designed and delivered a
series of faculty development workshops
for new faculty members. These workshops
continue with colleagues and now focus
on designing effective learning experiences
for occupation-centered graduate education.

Jane Davis Rourk, OTR/L, BCP, FAOTA

Jane is a native of North Carolina currently living in Durham, North Carolina. She received her Occupational Therapy degree
from the University of Pennsylvania. The focus of her clinical experience has been mental health and pediatrics. She has served in a number of
professional leadership positions at both the state and national levels. These include President of the North Carolina Occupational Therapy
Association, Chair of the North Carolina Licensure Board, Member of the Council on Allied Health in North Carolina, Speaker of the AOTA
Representative Assembly, and Chair of the AOTA Specialty Certification Board. Jane and her husband, Henderson, have four adult children. Her
special interests and hobbies include spending time with their young grandson, cooking, gardening, quilting, reading, needlepoint and travel.

Fred Sammons, OTR/L, FAOTA |
Believe
it or not, Fred began his professional life teaching mechanical
drawing to high school students. It was after serving
in the Army during the Korean War that he earned his Occupational
Therapy degree at Virginia Commonwealth University on
the GI Bill. His first job was at the Rehabilitation Institute
of Chicago, becoming the director of Occupational Therapy
in 1957. In 1960, Fred joined the staff of the amputee
clinic at Northwestern University, and this is where he
began to design and build devices to assist individuals
with disabilities in their every day activities. With
a growing demand for his devices, Fred decided in 1965
to devote all his time to creating, manufacturing, and
distributing his inventions, and "the rest is history."
Sammons, Inc. grew to a multimillion dollar business,
and is now Sammons Preston, a part of Patterson Medical
Inc. In retirement, Fred remains a special consultant
and special ambassador of this company to Occupational
therapists around the world.

Nancy
Vesper Snyder, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA
|
Nancy
Vesper Snyder is an acknowledged leader in Occupational
Therapy. She served the Foundation generously, completing
two terms as President of AOTF from 1969 to 1976 and 1985
to 1989. Under her direction the AOTF Board of Directors
established the AOTF state scholarship program and hired
the Foundation's first full-time executive director. In
according her the rare designation of Honorary Life Membership,
the Board of Directors of the American Occupational Therapy
Foundation recognizes Ms. Snyder's numerous contributions

Lyla
M. Spelbring, PhD, OTR, FAOTA
|
Spelly,
as she is known by her friends, earned her Bachelor of
Science in OT in 1951, her Master's Degree in 1959 from
Western Michigan University and her PhD from the Department
of Medical Care Organization, University of Michigan in
1981. She is a retired Colonel, member of the U.S. Army
Reserves, who also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves
between 1943 and 1945. Until her retirement, she served
as Head of the Department of Associated Health Professions
at Eastern Michigan University where she remains Professor
Emerita in the Occupational Therapy program. She has been
active in her profession at state and national levels.
She has been honored as a Life Member of the Huron District
Occupational Therapy Association (Michigan), received
the Distinguished Service Award, Honorary Life Member
and Fellow of the Michigan Occupational Therapy Association.
She was named Fellow of the AOTA and was awarded the AOTA
Award of Merit. Spelly is also a Life Member of the Board
of Directors of AOTF. In retirement, she continues her
community service with the Liviningston County Genealogical
Society, serving on and chairing various committees. |

Carlotta Welles,
MA, OTR, FAOTA |
Carlotta
is the recipient of both the AOTA Award of Merit and of
the AOTA and AOTF Presidents' Commendation, established
in honor of Wilma West. Carlotta's long career truly exemplifies
the criteria for awarding the Presidents' Commendation;
that is, the gift of leadership along with enthusiasm
and commitment to the profession exemplified by a lifetime
of achievement. Carlotta has been achieving, leading,
and giving to the profession of Occupational Therapy since
receiving her diploma from the Boston School of Occupational
Therapy in 1941. In 1953, she earned a master's degree
from the University of Southern California and later,
in 1970, teacher training at the University of California,
Los Angeles. Carlotta has filled the positions of a clinician,
consultant, educator, and financial advisor to both AOTA
and AOTF. In retirement, Carlotta continues to support
the Occupational Therapy profession.

Steve Wilburn,
AOTF Investment Advisor |
Steve
has worked in the financial services industry
for over twenty-four years. Joining Morgan
Stanley in January 1996, Steve is the financial
advisor to a number of foundations, non-profit
corporations and individuals throughout the
United States. His prior positions include
Managing Director of a private investment
bank in Los Angeles specializing in mergers
and acquisitions, and Executive Vice President
of an $8 billion financial company providing
capital for acquisitions and leveraged buyouts
worldwide. Steve is also an adjunct faculty
member for a private university in Southern
California where he teaches corporate finance
and international business. Steve received
his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in
Intellectual History at UCLA. He later earned
his Master of Business Administration in Finance
from UCLA. Prior to attending UCLA, Steve
served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a crewmember
aboard a polar icebreaker, making three expeditions
into the Arctic and one "Deep Freeze"
expedition into Antarctica. This prolonged
exposure to extreme cold is probably why Steve
has settled in Southern California, where
he now lives with his wife and two daughters. |

Fred Somers,
AOTA Executive Director |
Prior to
assuming his position as the Executive Director of the
American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), Mr.
Somers served as AOTA's Associate Executive Director for
Public Policy, overseeing the Association’s federal and
state legislative, regulatory and reimbursement
initiatives and the American Occupational Therapy
Political Action Committee (AOTPAC), the
political arm of the Association.
Mr. Somers has almost
thirty years of experience as an association executive,
Congressional staff member, lobbyist, and political
fundraiser. In his career, he has worked as a
Legislative Assistant to U.S. Representative James M.
Jeffords (R-VT) and as a senior lobbyist for the
Transportation Institute, the Seafarers International
Union, the Maritime Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and
the Air Line Pilots Association. He has worked
extensively on national, state and local political
campaigns and holds a bachelor's degree in Political
Science and Economics. Mr. Somers resides in Chantilly,
Virginia with his wife Jeanette and son Patrick. |
